A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study on the Experience of Women Who Participated in Group Art Therapy for Forgiving Parents
Kim Hyun-Jin

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to grasp the meaning and nature of group art therapy experiences dealing with the parental forgiveness process of adult women. The study participants were 14 adult women in their mid-twenties to early fifties, and group art therapy was conducted once or twice times a week, 100 minutes per session. As a research method, Max van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological methodology was applied. As a result, 9 essential themes and 41 sub-themes were derived. First, for female adults who wanted to be recovered from the injury that they get from their parents, the practical ¡°forgiving parents¡± program with consideration of intrapsychic dynamic was required. Second, dynamic art-making and art works with sensory media relieved pressure of forgiving parents, objectively view the cause of internal conflicts and emotional context, and provided an opportunity to take care of wounds for participants. Third, participants could expand the understanding of parents by experiencing deeper empathy and support through group art therapy where they could share their art work visually. Lastly, participants could empathize parents as an individual, understand the truthful meaning of forgiveness and newly recognize their existences as subjects of lives through group art therapy for forgiving parents. This study has enhanced an in-depth and concrete understanding of the group art therapy experience that deals with the parental forgiveness process of adult women, and can be a basic data for the development of forgiveness group art therapy.
